Etymology

Uncertain. The Classical Nahuatl term for pulque was octli, or specifically iztac octli ‎(“white pulque”). Pulque may be a Spanish derivation of Classical Nahuatl poliuhqui octli ‎(“spoiled pulque, spoiled wine”), from poliuhqui ‎(“something lost”).
