From Japanese 焼酎 (shōchū しょうちゅう), from Middle Chinese 燒酒 (ʃew-t͡sjúw "liquor") (compare Mandarin shāojiǔ 烧酒, Korean soju 소주), from 燒 ("burn", "flammable") + 酒 ("alcohol").
