Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *smukô ‎(“smoke, nebulous air”), from Proto-Indo-European *smukʷʰ- ‎(“to smoke; a smoke”). Cognate with German Schmauch ‎(“dense smoke”), Old Irish múch ‎(“smoke”), Ancient Greek σμύχω ‎(smúkhō, “burn with smoldering flame”) and Old Armenian մուխ ‎(mux, “smoke”).
