Etymology

Of Proto-Indo-European origin and cognate with Middle Irish múch (smoke), Welsh mwg, Old English smoca (English smoke), Ancient Greek σμύχω (smúkhō, burn with smoldering flame). See also մուրկ (murk). According to Martirosyan the proto-form presents us with difficulties concerning the vocalic length and the velar and we may be dealing with a European substrate word *(s)m(e)u/ūK/G(ʰ)-.
