1. The cane apple, an evergreen shrub or small tree (Arbutus unedo) native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe north to western France and Ireland, which bears fruits which resemble strawberries.
2. The madrone, Arbutus menziesii, an evergreen tree with rich orange-red bark which naturally peels away in thin sheets when mature, and which bears berries which are astringent but edible if prepared properly.
