Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish طاش (taş, stone, rock), from Proto-Turkic *diāĺ (stone).[1] Cognates include Old Turkic 𐱃𐱁 (taş, stone), Chuvash чул (čul, stone), Turkmen daş (stone), Yakut таас (taas, stone). Related to Proto-Mongolic *čilaɣu (stone) (cf. Mongolian чулуу (čuluu, stone)) and possibly also related to Proto-Tungusic *ǯola (stone) (cf. Evenki дёло (ǯolo, stone)). Under the controversial Altaic theory Korean (dol, stone) is also compared.[2]
