From Þórðar(“of Þórður”) the genitive of Þórður(“Þórður, an Icelandic male given name”) and gleði(“joy, happiness”), literally meaning the "joy of Þórður" or the "happiness of Þórður". It was coined by a reverend by the name of Árni when his labourer Þórður rejoiced in the raining on their neighbor Þórður of Rauðkollsstaðir's dry hay.
Although the word Þórðar is a proper name and is capitalized the compound word þórðargleði is not.[1]
