From Proto-Tocharian*āknātsā, probably corresponding to a Proto-Indo-European root *ṇ-ǵnō-tyḤ < *ṇ-ǵneh₃-to-, *ṇ-ǵneh₃-tih₂, from *ǵneh₃-(“know”), deriving its meaning from that of "ignorant". Compare Sanskrit अज्ञात(ájñāta, “unknown”), Latin īgnōtus(“unknown, ignorant”), Ancient Greek ἄγνωτος(ágnōtos, “unknown, also ignorant”). Compare Tocharian B aknātsa.
