From Proto-Tocharian*āknātsā, probably corresponding to a Proto-Indo-European root *ṇ-ǵnō-tyḤ < *ṇ-ǵneh₃-to-, *ṇ-ǵneh₃-tih₂, from *ǵneh₃-(“know”), deriving its meaning from that of "ignorant". Compare Sanskrit अज्ञात(ájñāta) ("unknown"), Latin ignotus(“unknown, also ignorant”), Ancient Greek ἄγνωτος(ágnōtos, “unknown, also ignorant”). Compare Tocharian A āknats.
