From Proto-Slavic*bělъgordъ. Composed of Ekavian Serbo-Croatian бе̏о(“white”) (from Proto-Slavic*bělъ) and гра̑д(“city”) (from Proto-Slavic*gordъ). The city is named after the white wall of the fortress that enclosed the city. See also Биоград, Бе́лгород(Bélgorod), Białogard.
