Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *dEgiŋ ‎(“squirrel”). A squirrel pelt was used as a monetary unit - see e.g. the etymology of Finnish raha ‎(“money”).

Cognate with Tatar тиен ‎(tiyen, “kopek”), Kazakh тиын ‎(tïın, “former currency unit”), Kyrgyz тыйын ‎(tıyın, “kopek”), Uzbek tiyin ‎(“currency unit in Uzbekistan”).
