Etymology

According to Ačaṙyan, a native Armenian formation meaning “darling, dear, having high value”, composed of *գարի ‎(*gari) +‎ -ա- ‎(-a-) +‎ գին ‎(gin, “price, value”), the unattested *գարի ‎(*gari) presumably meaning “expensive” or “heavy” and inherited from the Proto-Indo-European ancestor of Ancient Greek βαρύς ‎(barús, “heavy”), βάρος ‎(báros, “weight”), Latin gravis ‎(“heavy”), etc. The problem is that the Proto-Indo-European root for these is reconstructed with an initial *gʷ- (see *gʷréh₂us), which in Armenian would have given կ- ‎(k-). Ačaṙean suggest that we may be dealing with a *gʷ → *gʷʰ sound change.
