Etymology

Grown with a prothetic e- from Iranian *Rēvant, from *Raivant-, *Rayivant- ‎(“possessing wealth”). Compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(raēvant-, “rich, splendid”), [script needed] ‎(rayi-, “wealth”), Sanskrit रेवत् ‎(revat, “wealthy”), रयिवत् ‎(rayivat, “possessing wealth”), रयि ‎(rayi, “wealth”).

Hübschmann derived from Iranian *arvant- ‎(“swift”); compare Middle Persian [script needed] ‎(arvand, “swift”), Avestan [script needed] ‎(aurvant-, “swift”). But this is unlikely, as *arvant- would have yielded Armenian *Արուանդ ‎(*Aruand).

Corresponds to Latin Orontes and Ancient Greek Ὀρόντης ‎(Oróntēs) of Classical authors. Related to Երուազ ‎(Eruaz).
