According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *āludi-, from the root *ālu- ‎(“a bitter plant?”). See Pokorny for this root. Compare Sanskrit आलु ‎(ālu, “an esculent root, Amorphophallus paeoniifolius”), आलुक ‎(āluka, “the esculent root of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius”), Latin ālium ‎(“garlic”), ālum ‎(“species of comfrey plant”).
