Etymology
The origin is uncertain.
Ačaṙyan takes the root to be *արգ- (*arg-), found also in արգահատեմ (argahatem), and derives it from Proto-Indo-European *arkʷ-, with Welsh arffed (“lap”) and Irish arcuinn (“cow's udder”) as cognates; J̌ahukyan derived the ending -անդ (-and) from the Proto-Indo-European *-ti- suffix with a preceding -n̥- element.
Others connect the word with Proto-Slavic *grǫdь (“breast”) (Russian грудь (grudʹ)).
