From Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to sound, speak). Cognate with Old Norse belja (to roar), Old High German bellan (to bark, resound). For the suffix -ոք (-okʿ) compare կեղ-եք-եմ (keł-ekʿ-em), ող-ոք-եմ (oł-okʿ-em).
