From Middle Iranian *dānak, from Old Iranian *dāna-ka-, from the Proto-Iranian root *dā- (to cut), whence also դան (dan) and նրան (nran). Compare Sanskrit दान (dāna, cutting off), Persian داس (dās, sickle), داره (dāra, scythe, sickle).
