From Proto-Indo-European *tr̥s-, zero-grade of *ters- (to dry). Among the cognates compare especially Ancient Greek ταρσός (tarsós, cheese hurdle), ταρσιά (tarsiá, stake for drying figs), Old High German darra (stake for drying fruits) (German Darre).
