Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ḱluH-r-yo- or *ḱluH-r-yeh₂- ‎(“light, bright, clear, clean, joyful”). Cognates include Latin cluo ‎(“to clean”), Welsh clir ‎(“light, bright, clear, clean, joyful”), Lithuanian šlúoti ‎(“to wipe”), Ancient Greek κλύζω ‎(klúzō), Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌿𐍄𐍂𐍃 ‎(hlutrs, “pure, clean”). See also the by-form լուրթ ‎(lurtʿ).
