Middle Armenian

Etymology

Ačaṙyan remarks that the similarity with Kurdish qilêr (dirt, filth) is accidental and leaves the origin open.

According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gu-l-ēro-, from *gew- (to bend, curl) and cognate with German Keule (club, cudgel), Kaule (round objct), kullern (to roll). Alternatively, a Kartvelian borrowing: compare Georgian ყლე (q̇le).
