Etymology

The origin is unclear. Similar words are found in Finno-Ugric languages, namely Finnish vaski (copper) and Hungarian vas (iron), and in Sumerian [script needed] (guškin, gold). Unconvincing Proto-Indo-European etymologies have also been suggested.
