Etymology

From a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word of the form *si/ekʰu-, also reflected in Ancient Greek σικύα ‎(sikúa), σικύη ‎(sikúē), σεκούα ‎(sekoúa, “bottle-gourd, Lagenaria vulgaris; round gourd, Cucurbita maxima; gourd used as a calabash”); σίκυος ‎(síkuos), σικυός ‎(sikuós), σίκυς ‎(síkus, “cucumber or melon, Cucumis (sativus)”); σεκουάνη ‎(sekouánē, “a kind of olive”) and less likely in Proto-Slavic *tyky (Russian ты́ква ‎(týkva, “pumpkin”)).
