Etymology

The word was borrowed many times from Iranian, from its different dialects and over different periods. According to Pʿerixanyan, the most common spelling, սպարապետ ‎(sparapet), is from Parthian; compare Inscriptional Parthian 𐭎𐭐𐭀𐭃𐭐𐭕𐭉 ‎(spʾdpty), Manichaean Parthian ʿspʾd ‎(ispāδ). The less common form սպայապետ ‎(spayapet) was borrowed later from Middle Persian, or, perhaps formed in Armenian from սպայ ‎(spay) and պետ ‎(pet). The spelling ասպարապետ ‎(asparapet) is from early Middle Median *aspāδapat(i); the spelling ասպահապետ ‎(aspahapet) is from later Middle Median *aspāhapet. All originate from Proto-Iranian *spādapati- ‎(“commander of the army”), composed of *spāda- ‎(“army”), whence սպայ ‎(spay), and *pati- ‎(“lord”), whence պետ ‎(pet). Compare also Middle Persian 𐭮𐭯𐭠𐭧𐭯𐭲𐭩 ‎(spāhpet).
