Etymology

From Middle Iranian *pūt. Compare Middle Persian pwtk' (pūdag, foul, rotten), Persian پود (pūd, old), پوده (pūda, rubbed, worn), Avestan [script needed] (pūiti-, rottenness), Sanskrit पूतिक (pūtika, foul, stinking, putrid). These are ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pū̆- (to stink, rot), whence also Latin puter.

Old Georgian ფუტურო (puṭuro) may be borrowed from Armenian.
