ل (li-, la-, “to, for”) + إِيش (ʾēš, “what”), although the normal word for “what” is now شو (šū) Compare a similar structure in Egyptian Arabic لِيه (lēh) and Standard Arabic لِمَاذَا (li-māḏā), as well as in other languages such as French pourquoi.
