Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *gaHtHa-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬁𐬚𐬁 (gāʮā, “form of strophe, metre, namely the collections of Zarathustra's songs”). Same PII root *gaH- gave Sanskrit root √gāi (√gāi, “to sing”).
