明太子 ‎(hiragana めんたいこ, romaji mentaiko)

1. the marinated roe of Theragra chalcogramma, the Alaska pollock or walleye pollock

   A common ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Originated from 명란젓 ‎(myeongnanjeot) Korean cuisine^[2], introduced to Japan after the Russo-Japanese War. The typical seasoning and flavor is slightly different in Japan.
