돈
Korean
Syllable
돈 • (don)
Etymology 2
First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as 돈 (Yale: ton). Various hypotheses exist regarding the etymology beyond Middle Korean. Possibly a pre-Middle Chinese borrowing, from 錢 (OC *d͡zen, "money"). This word has also been connected with 돌— (dol-, “to turn, to circulate”) and 돌 (dol, “stone”).
