From Alþingis ‎(“of Althing, of the Icelandic parliament”), the genitive singular of Alþingi ‎(“Althing, the Icelandic parliament”) + húsið ‎(“the house”), the definite nominative singular of hús ‎(“house”). Literally meaning "the house of Althing" or "the house hosting the Icelandic parliament".
