Unclear. Perhaps from Dutch (*)kabbassen, from Old French cabasser (“put into a basket”), from cabas.[5] Alternatively, perhaps from an earlier word (*)carbage ("shred"), a potential variant of (*)garbage "wheat straw".[1]
