Probably ultimately from Latin ieiunium or ieiunus through a root *iaiunus > *aiunus. Compare Spanish ayuno, French jeun, jeûne, also Italian digiuno. The equivalent Aromanian word also carries the sense of 'starving', 'hungry'.
