Crimean Tatar

Noun

eşek

  1. (zoology) donkey

Declension

Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish اشك (eşek, donkey, ass; a silly, stupid, perverse man), from Proto-Turkic *eĺgek (donkey).[1] Related to Proto-Mongolic *elǯigen (donkey), hence Mongolian илжиг (ilžig, donkey), perhaps from a common source or a result of language contact.[2] Nişanyan thinks Old Turkic [script needed] (eşgek, donkey) may be derived from Old Turkic [script needed] (eş-, to walk, trot) (for which see eşmek).[3]

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (eşgek, donkey), Azeri eşşək (donkey), Bashkir ишәк (išäk, donkey), Chuvash ашак (ašak, donkey), Karachay-Balkar, Kyrgyz эшек (eşek, donkey), Turkmen eşek (donkey), Uzbek eshak (donkey).
