Origin obscure, but apparently akin to Scotsforlegen, forlagen(“utterly worn out, completely exhausted”), Danish and Norwegianforlegen(“embarrassed, perplexed”), Dutchverlagen(“abashed, degraded, soiled, abased”), equivalent to for- +lain. The sense development may be due to Scandinavian influence, compare Faroeseleggjask firi(“to become exhausted”), Old Norseleggjask fyrir(“to give up hope”).
