Etymology

Zero−grade form of Proto-Albanian *(s)pṛkeH2, from Proto-Indo-European *per- ‎(“to attempt, try, research, risk”). Close to Latin perīculum ‎(“danger, risk, trial”), Ancient Greek πεῖρα ‎(peîra, “trial, attemt”), Old English fǣr. Assumption of a loan from Byzantine Greek φρίκη ‎(phríkē) seems not plausible, because velar followed by front vowel would be palatalized. Compare also Romanian frică ‎(“fear, fright”), Aromanian fricã ‎(“fear, fright”).
