From Old Irish úar, from Proto-Celtic *owgros (compare Welsh oer), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂owg- (compare Old Armenian ոյծ (oyc)). The initial f- of Modern Irish comes from a misinterpretation of uar as fhuar in lenition environments.
