here (“army”) + toga (“leader”). From Proto-Germanic *harjatugô (“army leader”), which contains Proto-Germanic *harjaz (“army”) and a derivation of Proto-Germanic *teuhaną.[1] Cognate to Old High German herizogo (German Herzog), Old Norse hertogi.
