Usage notes
- This is an archaic word, but it is encountered fairly often in fairy tales, mainly in the context of somebody being given a magic hnoða which then rolls on its own to show the way.
- Hnoða may also be feminine rather than neuter.
Etymology 2
From Old Norse knoða, from Proto-Germanic *knudaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gnet- (“to press together”), from *gen- (“to compress”). Compare English knead, Dutch kneden, German kneten.
