From Proto-Slavic *junъ (“young”) + *-akъ (masculine nominalizing suffix cognate to Serbo-Croatian "-ak"). Cognate with Church Slavonic юнакъ (junakŭ), Czech jonák (Moravian Czech junák), Polish junak, Bulgarian юнак (junak).
