From the older form lecconerìa, either from leccare (“lick”, verb), or from Old High German lecchari or lecchōn, from Ancient Greek λιχνεία (likhneía, “gluttony; greed”). Cognate with Latin lingō (“lick”, verb) and Ancient Greek λείχω (leíkhō, “lick up”).
