From German Mammut, from French mammouth, from an Uralic language, like Proto-Mansi *mē̮ŋ-ońt ‘earth-horn’ (compare Northern Mansi ма̄ (mā, “earth”), аньт (āńt, “horn”)) or Khanty. Compare Proto-Uralic *mëxe (“earth”) (when the first remains were found, the local residents believed that it was an underground animal). Until 1984, it was spelled mammut.
