English
Noun
- (grammar, Britain) an unpronounced letter e at the end of a word; such as excite or glue.
- Note: When adding a suffix, the e is normally dropped befor a vowel but not before a consonant - thus excite => exciting, but excites
- Exceptions: The e is retained before a vowel if needed to retain the soft sound of a preceding c or g, or to distinguish words with otherwise same spelling - thus notice => noticeable, change => changeable, sing => singing but singe => singeing
