From Proto-Turkic *bɨńĺ(ɨk) (cat). Compare dialectal pışık, Azeri and Turkmen pişik, Tatar песи (pesi), Karakalpak pıshıq, Uzbek mushuk, Kyrgyz мышык (mışık), Kazakh мысық (mısıq), Kumyk мишик (mişik), Bashkir бесәй (besäy), Uyghur مۈشۈك (müshük).

Superficially similar to English puss, Romanian pisică, Proto-Algonquian *pešiwa, all seemingly of onomatopoeic origin from the sound used to call a cat.
