sâmbătă f (plural sâmbete)
Either inherited from Vulgar Latin *sambata, from sambatum, from Latin sabbatum, or alternatively from Proto-Slavic *sǫbota (or influenced by it). The Latin is derived from Ancient Greek σάββατον (sábbaton), ultimately from Hebrew שַׁבָּת (shabát). Compare French samedi, itself also from *sambatī diēs. Compare also Dalmatian sabata, Ladin sabeda, Friulian sabide, Romansch sonda, sanda, somda.
