From Proto-Germanic *sinþaz. Cognate with Old Saxon sīþ, Old High German sind, sint, Old Norse sinn (Icelandic sinni), Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐌽𐌸𐍃 (sinþs). The root is a variant of the ancestor of sendan.
