Borrowing from English topaz, from Old French topace, from Ancient Greek Τοπάζιος (Topázios, proper noun), ancient name of St. John's Island, Egypt, in the Red Sea, believed to be the first discovered source of the mineral τοπάζιον (topázion, “peridot”).
