Unclear. Possibly from a Balkan substrate, continuing Illyrian Tergitio (“merchant”). Usually assumed to be connected with Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tirgus, Swedish torg (“market, marketplace”). This group is considered to be cognate with the Italian city name of Trieste Tergeste.
