Old English
Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *uwwalǭ, originally a diminutive of *uwwô (“owl”) (Old High German hūwo, Old Saxon hūo), probably a word imitative of the animal's call, or a variant of *ūfaz, *ūfǭ (compare Swedish uv ‘horned owl’, Bavarian Auf), from Proto-Indo-European *up-. Cognate with Middle Low German ūle, Dutch uil, Old Norse ugla. A Germanic variant *uwwilǭ was the source of Old High German ūwila (German Eule).
