Etymology

According to J̌ahukyan, either reduplicated from *աղ- (*ał-) or compounded from *աղ- (*ał-) + -ա- (-a-) + մող (moł). In any case, according to him *աղ- (*ał-) goes back to Proto-Indo-European *al- (to wander, roam), with cognates such as Ancient Greek ἀλάομαι (aláomai, to wander, roam), ἀλύω (alúō, to be deeply stirred, excited, to be beyond oneself; to wander, to roam about, to lounge idly), Latvian aluot (to wander around, to get lost), Latin ambulo, Tocharian A āl-, Tocharian B āl- (to keep away, check, restrain).
