From Iranian *barz-. Compare Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬱 (barəziš, cushion, cover). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰelǵʰ-; see there for more.

The later senses developed from the original meaning of "pillow".
