1. (law) mortgage.

     มาตรา ๗๐๒ อันว่าจำนองนั้น คือ สัญญาซึ่งบุคคลคนหนึ่งเรียกว่า ผู้จำนอง เอาทรัพย์สินตราไว้แก่บุคคลอีกคนหนึ่งเรียกว่า ผู้รับจำนอง เป็นประกันการชำระหนี้ โดยไม่ส่งมอบทรัพย์สินนั้นให้แก่ผู้รับจำนอง‎

     Section 702 As for mortgage, it is a contract by which a person, called mortgagor, assigns a property to another person, called mortgagee, as security for the performance of an obligation, without delivering the property to the mortgagee.

     The term chamnong was formerly used together with the term chamnam and the two were synonymous. They have just been used according to the Civil and Commercial Code in our days.

     Section 702...The mortgagee is entitled to receive the performance of an obligation made out of the mortgaged property before ordinary creditors, without having to consider whether or not the ownership over the property has been transferred to a third party.

     มาตรา ๗๐๙ บุคคลคนหนึ่งจะจำนองทรัพย์สินของตนไว้เพื่อประกันหนี้อันบุคคลอื่นจะต้องชำระ ก็ให้ทำได้‎

     Section 709 If any person is to mortgage his own property as security for an obligation which another person is bound to perform, he shall be allowed to do so.
